Frequently Asked Questions

Where are your stations located?
Station 221 26 East Main Street, Marlton
Station 223 150 Merchants Way, Marlton
Station 225 498 Hopewell Road, Marlton, NJ
Fire Administration 984 Tuckerton Road, Suite 205, Marlton, NJ

I live in Marlton, but another department responded.
Evesham Fire-Rescue has a mutual aid agreement that dispatches neighboring departments to assists us during times of high call volume. This allows a faster response to an emergency.

Are there always firefighters at the fire station?
No. A mix of career and volunteer firefighters staff the stations. Depending on the time of the day, volunteers respond from home to the station and then respond to calls.

What is a typical workday for a Firefighter?
The Officer assigns fire station duties to the crew for that day. Duties include cleaning and station maintenance, apparatus checks and maintenance, and supporting volunteer operations. Firefighters also participate in community events and in-service training activities. The in-service training involves classroom instruction and hands-on training. Emergency incidents may interrupt assigned duties, such as emergency and non-emergency incidents, which includes but are not limited to residential, commercial, vehicle, trash fires, and false alarms.

Why do Firefighters break windows and chop holes in the roof at a fire?
Firefighters ventilate (chop holes in a roof and break windows) to remove the blazing heat, smoke, and toxic gases. This gives trapped residents a better chance to escape and improves conditions so that firefighters can extinguish the fire.

Why do Firefighters chop holes in walls?
The process of chopping holes in walls is necessary to expose hidden fires inside the walls.

Why do you block traffic lanes at auto accidents, sometimes more lanes than necessary?
We block traffic lanes for the safety of our personnel and our patients. Blocking extra lanes keep our personnel safe when they go back to our apparatus to get more equipment and help protect the victim we are trying to stabilize. Over 25 firefighters are killed or injured each year while working at incidents on streets and highways.

What do I do when I see an emergency vehicle approaching when I am driving?
Motorists should pull their vehicles safely to the right when an emergency vehicle is approaching. It is not recommended to stop in the middle of the road or proceed through an intersection against the signals. Remember to safely pull to the right.

Why do I see fire trucks at the grocery store or at other stores?
Because the crews must eat meals at the station, they sometimes gather food to cook. At times firefighters all eat the same meal, as a group. The crews pay for their food out of their own pockets. So, after the equipment is checked and the housework completed, one of the fire trucks will then make a quick trip to the grocery store to purchase the food for the shift. All crews remain in service to respond to calls during this time.

Why do the fire trucks turn on their lights to backup or back into the station?
Sometimes when backing, the driver of the fire apparatus turn on the emergency lights (red lights) to warn all vehicles to stop.

Why does a fire truck come when I call an ambulance?
Because firefighters can and do get there first, and time is critical in a medical emergency. All career firefighters and some volunteer firefighters are cross-trained as EMTs.

Why does the fire engine respond to auto accidents?
In many instances auto accidents require firefighters to remove injured persons who are trapped. Firefighters also assess the scene for hazards, such as fuel leaks, disabled airbags, and auto batteries that may need disconnecting.

What does it mean when my smoke alarm chirps or my carbon monoxide sounds intermittently?
The smoke alarm will chirp when its time to replace the battery. We encourage residents to change the smoke alarm battery and carbon monoxide detector battery when they change their clocks for Daylight Saving time in the spring and fall each year.

How many smoke alarms should I have?
You should have a smoke alarm on each level of your home, outside all sleeping areas, and inside each sleeping area.

Does Evesham Fire-Rescue refill fire extinguishers?
Unfortunately, we do not refill fire extinguishers. It is recommended that you contact a commercial fire extinguisher company for recharging. A listing of commercial fire extinguisher companies can be found in the local phone directory under fire extinguishers/equipment. Many household fire extinguishers cannot be recharged and must be discarded after use. An annual inspection of the expiration date is encouraged to ensure that the manufacturer date has not expired.

Evesham Fire-Rescue and Evesham Township use the Uniform Fire Prevention Code and the Uniform Construction Code currently adopted by the State of New Jersey.
